The Gender Playground

The Gender Playground is opening for the first time in Leiden soon! (Nederlands beneden)

Create your own gender clown or drag persona and learn how to perform from an actual drag house. Work with thrifted materials to design your look with the help of our lovely clothing-fairies and their sewing machines. Get advice from our amazing hairdresser, who will offer tips for genderbending any possible hairstyle. Visit our talented make-up artist at the beauty station to make your persona stand out on stage!

Program?

In two workshops, you will develop your drag persona, design your performance and dress up to look the part.

The workshops take place from 13:00 - 18:00. You can reserve a spot for a three-course dinner at 18:00 at the vegan restaurant for under 10 EUR (20 spots available), or you can go out to eat in the nearby city center. At 20:30 the doors open to The Gender Playground party with DJ Miiish and awesome performances!

Workshop I by Haus of 4D

Are you new to drag? Do you want to perform, but don't know where to begin? Then this drag workshop is just for you! Shezo Xtra and Sho No Mercii are two drag performers who will teach you how to construct an idea and make that into reality! We will help you create a drag persona and performance for the party in the evening! What can you expect? We will help you put together a complete performance, including theatrics, dance, design and makeup tips, as well as anything else you need for your drag debut! We will practice using some exercises to warm up that will also help you prepare and bring out your inner fabulous performer!

Workshop II by the Collective

Building your character, building your look, that's what it is all about!

In this open workshop space you can meet with specialists and get help with various aspects of creating a look. Our hairdresser can help or advise you on gender-bending your hairstyle. Two lovely clothing fairies with sewing machines and endless creativity can help you change, adjust, make or create the perfect outfit from thrifted clothes and fabrics. Of course, we also offer a make-up station where you can experiment on each other or yourself with our beautiful and talented artist to help if needed.

The party at night?

At this titillating gender-clowning party we invite everyone - also those who didn’t attend the workshops - to embrace their gender expression and shine bright. Although we advocate freeing the nipple, we ask you to please keep your genitalia covered as this is a vanilla event in a vanilla setting and location.

Drag MC Redda will announce the workshop guests and their performances (it is not mandatory to perform), and will perform as well. We arranged for a DJ who is well-known at this location to play some amazing danceable hits!

The DJ?

Miiish can turn anything into a party: a volleyball camp, a wedding, a movie night and ... a gender-clowning party!

Expect queer and camp hits, some ugly-ass 90’s dancehall and, of course, all the guilty pleasures you can imagine to dance to.

Tickets and prices?

Tickets are sold separately for the workshops during the day and for the party with drag performances in the evening/ night.

We kept the prices low so that everyone can join, regardless of income!

• Party and open stage (20:30 - late): € 9,-
• Dinner to be reserved and paid on the spot: € 8,50

The bar will be open all day serving tea, coffee and soda. From 16:00 beers, wine etc.

Accessibility?

A total of 60 workshop spots are available and 130 for the party in the evening/night.

This location has multiple spaces with low lighting and good soundproofing for our ND friends who need to take a break from stimuli every now and then.

The entire venue is wheelchair accessible. A chairlift may be used to get to the first floor if you are comfortable with that. There is also an accessible restroom. The performance stage itself is not wheelchair accessible, but we can do part of the performances on the floor if needed.

The location is easily reached by public transport.

Wat?

The Gender Playground opent binnenkort voor het eerst de deuren in Leiden!

Leer hoe je een gender clown of drag persona én performance creëert en uitvoert met de hulp van een echt drag house. Werk met kringloopmaterialen om je look te creëren samen met onze kleding-kunstenaars en hun naaimachines. Krijg advies van onze geweldige kapper die je alle mogelijke tips geeft om elke haarstijl te genderbenden. Kom langs bij onze getalenteerde make-up artiest bij het make-up- en beautystation om jouw persona te laten knallen op het podium!

Programma?

In twee workshops creëer je je eigen persona en performance, en verkleed je je om helemaal in stijl te verschijnen.

De workshops vinden plaats van 13:00 – 18:00. Je kunt vanaf 17:00 een ticket kopen voor een driegangendiner om 18:00 bij het vegan restaurant, of natuurlijk zelf ergens gaan eten in het nabijgelegen stadscentrum. Om 20:30 gaan de deuren open voor The Gender Playground-feest met DJ en performances!

Workshop I door Haus of 4D

Ben je nieuw in drag? Wil je optreden maar weet je niet waar te beginnen? Dan is deze dragworkshop precies voor jou! Shezo Xtra en Sho No Mercii zijn twee dragperformers die je leren hoe je een idee vormgeeft en omzet in realiteit! We helpen je een dragpersona en performance samen te stellen die je meteen kunt gebruiken op het feest in de avond!Wat kun je verwachten? Wij helpen je een volledig nummer in elkaar te zetten, met ondersteuning in theatrale expressie, dans, design, make-up tips en alles wat je nodig hebt voor jouw dragdebuut! We doen wat warming-up-oefeningen om je voor te bereiden zodat we de fabulous performer in jou naar boven brengen!

Workshop II door het Collective

Je personage bouwen is een belangrijke stap, maar ook het ontwerpen van je look is essentieel!

In deze open workshopruimte kun je kennismaken met specialisten die je op allerlei manieren helpen bij het maken van je look. Een geweldige kapper die je helpt of adviseert bij het genderbenden van je haarstijl; twee prachtige kledingfeeën met naaimachines en eindeloze creativiteit die je helpen om van kringloopkleding en stoffen de perfecte outfit te maken, aan te passen of compleet nieuw te creëren. En natuurlijk ons make-up station waar je op elkaar of jezelf kunt experimenteren—met onze prachtige en getalenteerde make-up artiest die met al haar enthousiasme klaar staat om te helpen.

Het feest ’s avonds?

Op dit prikkelende genderclowning-feest nodigen we iedereen uit—ook wie niet naar de workshops is geweest—om te stralen en met genderexpressie te spelen. Dit is een vanilla event en hoewel we voorstanders zijn van ‘free the nipple’ vragen we wel je genitaliën te bedekken.

Drag MC Redda kondigt de workshop deelnemers en hun performances aan (optreden is niet verplicht), en zal zelf ook een paar korte optredens verzorgen. En natuurlijk hebben we een DJ geregeld die op deze locatie én bij ons bekendstaat om hun geweldige dansbare hits!

De DJ?

Miiish kan van alles een feestje maken—van een volleybalkamp tot een bruiloft, van een filmavond tot… een gender-clowning party!

Verwacht queer en camp hits, wat heerlijk lelijke 90’s dancehall en natuurlijk alle guilty pleasures die je je kunt voorstellen om op te dansen.

Tickets en prijzen?

Tickets worden apart verkocht voor de workshopdag en voor het feest in de avond met de drag performances. We houden de prijzen laag zodat iedereen kan meedoen, ongeacht inkomen!

De bar is de hele dag open voor thee, koffie en fris. Vanaf 16:00 ook bier, wijn, enz.

Toegankelijkheid?

Er zijn in totaal 60 workshop plekken en 130 plekken voor het feest ’s avonds.

De locatie heeft meerdere ruimtes met zachte verlichting en goede geluidsisolatie voor onze ND-vrienden die af en toe even prikkelarm willen zitten.

De hele locatie is rolstoeltoegankelijk; voor de bovenverdieping kan een stoellift worden gebruikt als je je daar prettig bij voelt. Er is ook een toegankelijk toilet. Het podium in de zaal is niet toegankelijk, maar we kunnen een deel van de performances op de vloer doen als dat nodig is voor de toegankelijkheid.

De locatie is goed bereikbaar met het openbaar vervoer.
