With Resistor's self-named eclectic style of 'Rave 'n Rock' the October 2011 debut EP 'The Bastards Have Landed' [TBHL] is the result of going against the grain. The heavy mix of techno, rock, rap and punk is combined with a live rock-vibe and high tech skills. 'Resistor shows hard music can be party music', a music-reporter writes just after the EP launch party.
“We pursuit the heaviness of true rockbands with the groove and loudness of a major dance party. We want everyone to go to 11”, says lyricist Dennis Jansen.”'The Bastards Have Landed' is the result of putting all this on tape”.
Originating from Dutch project-town Almere, filled with its repetitive city-blocks and mirrored office buildings, the city had an influence on the band. “It was a necessity to create a loud voice that would stand up against all the planned paths that lay before us. This brought us together. Escape. There was a lot of crazy creative experiment in the early days”, says Beatcreator Dick Roseboom. “A live drummer, a lead female vocalist, more guitars. It was like the switch was turned. We share our different musical tastes. The electronic works of David Bowie, Senser, Trent Reznor, Placebo and the Prodigy are my biggest influences”. “Dennis and i bring a different flavor to the table”, says guitarist Wietze Vink. “BioHazard, Hatebreed, Rage against the Machine and Machine Head are on our laptops”.
The result surprises; “With their full sound you would expect a big ensemble instead of a three piece... The crowd is loving it. A fierce combination between the Prodigy and Rage against the Machine”, VPRO 3voor12, blogs after live shows.
Lots of experimental tracks were created and some were directly delivered to underground Japanese club dj's via Toryumon, a Japanese spin-off of Sony UK. Next to that Dennis and Wietze created a soundtrack for a feature horror film 'Dead End'. Dick acted as sound-engineer for many bands including shows with Japanese rock band ‘Electric Eel Shock’ on their European tour with the Bloodhound Gang.
“When we stepped back into the rehearsal room in 2010 that initial fire had grown brighter and a lot clearer. We stripped tracks down, rewrote, scratched, buried and started working on new material”, says Dennis. “Our debut EP, is in name also a reference to those early days. Movie buffs will recognize the line from Peter Jackson's debut Bad Taste. While laying the foundation the band came into contact with innovative US label Banshee Music who work with artists like Sevendust, Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, The Cult) and the Los Lonely Boys to create signature music for renowned sports team and clients like; MTV, Fox Sports, Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. “This has always been a sports minded group”, smiles guitarist Wietze. “Dick is a diehard long distance cyclist and Dennis played Mens-fastpitch Softball in the Dutch Major League and for the national team. And me? I work in a bar”. In 2010 two early tracks were used in the online Indycar documentary "Join the Ride" for HVM racing. Special mixes were created as ceremony/walk up music for the European Cup Finals Baseball summer 2011.
The signature single of the EP is Trigger' (single released early Oct. 2011). Digital distribution is done through Island Def Jam. Physical copies and promotion is done via delarosa records. Japanese music listeners and fans of Dutch Rave 'n Rockband Resistor can listen to the 'The Bastards Have Landed' for free on their mobile phone. Access is provided via QR code. “Club DJ's in Japan were the first to pick up our earliest demos. That was pretty big for us. This is us saying domo”, says beatcreator Dick Roseboom. More to come>
